Reality Shows That Aren't Crap (Relatively Speaking)

-->

I'll go on record here as saying that I'm not much of a fan of 'reality television'. In some cases, I have to ask if the term, 'reality show' is really warranted. For instance, do you really think that none of the 'interviews' where one designer (Project Runway), chef (Hell's Kitchen) or castaway (Survivor) talks smack about another person aren't 'prodded' in some way? For instance, all the fights that break out randomly on Jerry Springer or Maury Povich probably look fake because they-or at least some of them-are fake. Either that, or exaggerated for the benefit of the audience. There's no real reason I can think of that a reality show producer couldn't do the same thing if they wanted. Also, all TV shows (except maybe live morning or late-night shows) do some sort of editing to make things more streamlined and interesting. It's not hard at all for producers to take snippets of film and put them together to give off the image they're going for.

That being said, there are some reality-based shows I've found that are at least based on decent premises.

-Wife Swap. This show, first on ABC but now in re-runs on the Lifetime network, attempts to answer the age-old question of whether the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence. They will take two families-usually from completely different socio-economic backgrounds or lifestyles-and 'swap wives' for two weeks. The wives/mothers stay with the other family for two weeks and basically live the other woman's life. For one week, she goes by 'their rules', then the tables turn. There have been some really interesting pairings-a self-obsessed Beverly Hills housewife and a rustic farm family; a vegan and a down-home Cajun family; a former drill sergeant with a family of free-spirited fantasy role-players. Sometimes the two families turn out to be friends, but there have been a couple of times where an actual fight has broken out across the table when the couples meet. Whatever happens, it is a lot of fun to see how people who are different from us live.
-The Biggest Loser. This NBC show is much more positive than its name would suggest. A group of obese people come to a ranch where they are put to work on losing their excess weight. Like other reality shows, the group is pared down over a period of weeks as they lose weight and learn a healthier regimen. The title 'Biggest Loser' refers to the person who has lost the most weight over the 'contest' period. It doesn't much matter who makes it to the end, though, because everyone benefits. While it can be difficult to stay on the regimen while in 'the real world', the show gives the contestants a head start to a healthier life. You can't get much more positive than that.
-Talent showcases. There are so many of them out there now, each one with a different focus. For instance, viewers of Dancing With The Stars get to see professional dancers teach celebrities how to dance and compete for a prize. The Voice has various people in the music industry judge a progression of singers, with the twist that they can't see the singer and must judge only on their voices. And, of course, there's American Idol where we see previously-unknown singers compete for a record contract. While some winners (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood) have had more success than others, at least they get a start. They get a start, and we get to see some amazing performances. Win-Win.

As you can see, there are quite a few reality shows out there that aren't the 'trash' some people consider that genre to be. Don't get me wrong-there are still plenty of shows featuring annoying quasi-celebrities and aging musicians trying to 'find love'. It's just interesting to see that this wildly popular genre of television has a few decent shows that you don't mind watching with your kids.

Pros and Cons of Dating Reality Shows

-->

I'm sure we've all seen the ads for 'reality' shows that try to help people find love. First, there was The Bachelor, where several women competed for the heart of a businessman. Since then, there have been several other shows with different settings, but all have the same goal-to help whoever is hosting (or starring) find love. We're right to be skeptical about whether or not this is possible but, even if it isn't,
we just can't stop watching! Like most other things, they have their advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the ups and downs of dating reality shows as I see them.

First, there's the romance factor. They look romantic, which is probably the main reason so many women watch them; well, that, and the fact that a lot of the men are hot! However, it's 'fake' romance, set up for an audience. While most of us are realistic enough not to expect limos, strawberries and champagne all the time, it can set expectations too high. We know that the fairy-tale romances we daydreamed about as kids aren't real, but sometimes the shows can remind you just how 'not real' they are. The truth is that almost all men are going to fall short when compared to these unrealistically rich and poetic 'bachelors'. I know this well because I saw a lot of flaws in my then-boyfriend because he wasn't as romantic or attentive as the men on the show. It's not that I was 'comparing' him to those men so much as that it made me think about the things I wasn't happy about in our relationship.

In a way, though, this is a good thing. Those feelings of dissatisfaction can foster discussion about the things in your relationship that triggered them, opening the lines of communication for both of you. Whether the relationship works out or not, you've had to sit down and realistically think about where it is going and whether or not it can be what you want and need in the long run. This relationship did not work out, and that was for the best because I now have a wonderful husband. He doesn't give me flowers or take me out on his (non-existent) yacht, but he does take the time and care to talk about things and really listen to what I have to say.

There was one takeoff of 'The Bachelor' called 'More To Love', where everyone on the show was of a normal- to plus-sized weight. I say 'normal' because, while the average woman in the US is a size 12, the average female reality show contestant is a 2 or a 4! If you've ever seen any of the other shows, you know exactly what I mean. The very fact that networks were even willing to have a show like this indicates that perhaps the tide is turning in terms of standards of beauty.

There was one short-lived show called 'Beauty and the Geek' that helped reinforce the idea that it's not just about looks, it's about what's on the inside too. In today's celebrity-obsessed world, there's always a need for that. For all of us former- and current- nerds out there, it's nice to see one of us come out on top for a change!

And finally, there's the 'circus freak' factor. Some shows like Rock of Love or Flavor Of Love that feature aging musicians trying to find girlfriends make the rest of us feel normal.

Like I said, dating reality shows have their ups and downs. While I wouldn't suggest them as 'teaching tool' for young girls (some of them aren't suitable for kids anyway), they can make us think about things in our own lives. Since they aren't going anywhere anytime soon, we might as well find something positive to say. If nothing else, you can usually find some good eye candy!

Why Is Reality TV Still So Popular?

-->

Have you gotten sucked into 'reality TV'? I put it in quotation marks because it's a well-known fact that the shows don't completely represent reality; the scenes that aren't scripted or prompted by producers are often edited to convey a certain story line. Even so, it's pretty obvious that this is a genre of TV shows that isn't going away any time soon. But why is it so successful? Why do we get 'sucked in'? There are several reasons:
  • It's fun to see how other people live, even if it's not completely real. Humans are natural 'busybodies'-we like to see the private dealings of others, especially those who are different from us. I'm not just talking about the rich and famous here, although that's part of it. One of my favorite shows is Wife Swap, where they take two families and 'swap wives' for two weeks. The purpose is for them to walk in the other wife's shoes, but it allows us to walk in them too. Are you a 'preppy' type? Watch what happens when another 'prep' goes to stay at a farm. Are you a 'country girl'? Watch what happens when one goes to stay in LA. If nothing else, it's entertaining.
  • It's 'mindless entertainment'. After a long day staring at expense reports or cleaning up after kids, reality TV gives you a way to rest your mind. There's just something about watching a real-life Ned Flanders move in with Gregory House that makes you forget about that tense conversation with your boss.
  • Acceptable schadenfreude. 'Schadenfreude' is a German word that means taking pleasure at someone else's misfortune. My parents told me that I shouldn't do this, and generally I don't. However, it's hard to feel sorry for the person who gets smacked on Big Brother for harassing his linebacker-built roommate or Kim Kardashian when she gets fussed at for being a whiner.
  • It makes you feel normal. Related to the above, you can't help but feel normal and smart when you watch the antics of some reality TV 'stars'. No matter how strange your neighbors think you are, I doubt you hold a candle to the Kardashians. I'm a total airhead at times, but at least I know that buffalo wings aren't made from actual buffalo! It's rumored that Jessica Simpson was 'playing stupid' for the sake of ratings, but that's beside the point.
  • It's a 'guilty pleasure'. Most of us think of chocolate when we hear that phrase, but it fits here too. Even some of the most 'TV-snobby' people I know have admitted that they've fallen prey to this 'vice'! At least this one isn't fattening.
And now, for the most important reason:
  • Frankly, some of the men are hot. I don't know about you, but I've seen some real hotties on Project Runway and The Apprentice. And that's just the contestants; American Idol fans get to look at cutie Ryan Seacrest on a regular basis! Good-looking and talented-what more do you need? :) This is just my opinion; your mileage may vary.
I don't watch that much 'reality TV', but there are some shows I enjoy. These are my reasons; what are yours?
